Port-au-Prince, Haiti—
Background: The RYS in an effort to work to create a wider network of cooperating organization is working with Friendship America Projects. Friendship America Projects seek to build throughout North and South America a stronger bond of trust, cooperation and service. These programs also seek to build ecumenical harmony.
This was the first Caribbean project for RYS which choose Haiti in part for its 70 % illiteracy rate and massive poverty. The recent increased political stability made the project more feasible and invitation and preparations by Dr. Marie Renee of the Haitian Academy proved decisive in our picking this location.
This project focused on pulling students and participants from the America's together to build a medical clinic at the Haitian Academy.
Duration: January 5 - 15, 1996
Work: Participants roofed a school building, helped make a foundation for a clinic and landscaped the terrain at the Haitian Academy.
Summary: The project pulled USA based students on winter recess along with participants from nine nations. The local participants included the former President's daughter and the former minister of education's son, Claude Duyoun.
