Religious Youth Service

RYS Participants Construct Rooms at the IRFF Agriculture Institute in Ghana

Kasoa, Ghana—

Duration: August 19 - 26, 1996

Work: At the IRFF Agriculture Institute six rooms were constructed by the RYS participants.

Summary: Seven nations were represented among the participants including Japan, USA, New Zealand, Nigeria, Great Britain, Cote D' Ivoire and the host nation, Ghana.

On August 21st RYS participants attended an IRFF seminar on the use of Fish Powder as a nutritional aid was held. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture in charge of fisheries was present as well as a representitive from the National Council for Women and Development (NCWD). Following the seminar the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare helped distribute to various hospitols, children's homes and rehailitation centers 50lb bags of fish powder.

On August 22nd the RYS attended an IRFWP seminar entitled: " The Role of Religious Leaders in Bringing Peace". Among the faiths represented were; Roman Catholic, Islam, Bahia, Hare Krishna, African Traditional and Disco Christo church. 250 participants attended along with various religious and government leaders.

IRFF/IRFWP includes one day fish powder and one day Peace conference. Work at the IRFF Agricultural school.

In general, the RYS had a very strong inter-religious program that included visits to religious sites and talks with religious leaders. The Depty Minister of Information, Hon. Kojo Yankah was moved and requested that " Youth clubs be formed in all our primary and secondary schools to promote the RYS ideals."

Media: The national television covered both seminars and the closing event. National press coverage also occurred.
