Numerous Cultural Programs Join RYS in First 'As Friends' Project in Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan— 1st As Friends Project
Background: This project involved participants mainly from Asia and Australia and was part of the As Friends (Asian Friendship and Service Project) which seeks to build intra-Asian cooperation and provide an outreach of service to the world.
Duration: August 19 - 26, 1996
Work: Painting and light repairs at the Kwang Chi Elderly center.

Advisors: Mr. Thiagaraj, Malaysia,(Miniser of Non-Muslim Religion's)
Summary: This was a major project which drew participants and staff came from nine nations. Senior education leaders, Dr. Ron Burr and Dr. Sherry Hartman worked to develop the international educational background and communication skills of the participants. Numerous cultural programs were part of the program and the RYS built on the national foundations in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan RYS alumni.
Cooperating Organizations: Taipei's Mayor's office, Zhong Shan Buddhist Temple, Kwang Chi Elderly Center.
