Batangas, Philippines— As Friends Project
When: March, 1999
During 1999, Asia hosted three RYS projects with the Philippines hosting a pair of projects in the state of Batangas in March and in October. The RYS project in March had over sixty participants from the Philippines, India, USA, Germany and Thailand. The work projects included a tree planting with an environmental component and a social service project. The social service was offered to a very poor community of 'boat people' who are isolated from the general community.
Through the sharing of time, labor, conversation and culture with the predominantly Muslim community the RYS participants gained some deep insights into aspects of life and human nature.
