Cape Town, South Africa—

When: December, 1999

In Cape Town, South Africa the RYS had its final project of the year which was timed to coincide with the World Parliament of Religions and to demonstrate the spirit of religious and racial cooperation that can lead us into a new millennium of peace. Thirty participants and staff joined from South Africa, England, USA, Angola and Namibia and with the cooperation of the municipality helped paint the inside of a large community sports stadium. The second project, which the participants put their efforts into, brought us to the beautiful Cape Coast at a National Park. To protect several endangered fauna we worked the soil to rid the area of unwanted weeds that were taking over the park.

Many of the participants resided in areas that had recently been 'townships'. Despite living close to the Cape the RYS provided them with the first opportunity to see the beauty of coast. For others, this project provided the first time that they could work together in friendship with people of various nationalities and races.
