Jogjakarta, Indonesia— Unity in Diversity
Duration: June 20 - 30, 2003
Central Work: Laying a foundation for a school extension for the Old Islamic School.
Highlights: A visit to the Borobodur Temple, one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
To help heal the past animosity between the Chinese Indonesian and the Malay Indonesian communities the Indonesian Confucius Society helped organize our work at an old Islamic School. The project drew Indonesians of a wide variety of geographic and religiously diverse communities and showed how it is possible to work together with one heart towards the service of a community in need. Youth from local organizations were surprised at how much they had gained from such voluntary work as most of them are familiar only with interfaith dialogue. Most now realize that for peace to begin, we have to go beyond dialogue and conferencing. This project showed how that could be accomplished.
