RYS-Honduras: Launching of the IIFWP/RYS Medical Clinic

Religious Youth Service

Tegucigalpa, Honduras—

When: September 27, 2003

 Since 1996 the RYS has been active in Honduras through both hosting International projects and through RYS Club activities. The active local club members have served in prisons, hospitals and in general community service. Through the work of local IIFWP Ambassador Clementino Funes the RYS Medical Clinic was opened for the purpose of serving a poorer community in Tegucigalpa. RYS members helped offer service and support.

The clinics’ opening celebration was attended by local and national leaders and blessed by a Catholic priest El Padre Pedro and the President of the Fraternity of Christian Business Men of the Completed Gospel. The RYS clinic project started one year ago and faced many difficulties in the process of gathering numerous contributions. The most difficult task was securing a doctor willing to work in this very dangerous area and Dr. Dario Zuniga took on the challenge for he felt it was God’s project.

 

The program was highlighted with a variety of interreligious programs including joining pilgrims in the Allure Festival. The community was deeply moved with the heart and spirit of the volunteers who worked on the local school. Our cooperation became a substantial model of the peace building spirit of reconciliation so needed in this nation.
 
 This was the second RYS project in New Zealand and the 1 st international program. This project drew much support from Australia and pulled in participants from a wide variety of nations and religious traditions. Networking with organizations was a key to the programs success as Habitat for Humanity, the local civic leaders and the Moreau Youth Movement worked to model the pattern of cooperative living so critical in building a culture of everlasting peace.
