Bayan-Ulgii, Western Mongolia— Asia Friends Project
The 3rd RYS in Mongolia focused on promoting cooperation between the Muslim and Buddhist population in Bayan Ulgii, located in the Western part of the country.
Duration: August 2 - 9, 2004
Central Work: Construction on facilities used to service the poor
Focusing on a shared quest for spiritual values, participants explored the various ways Buddhists, Muslims and Christian strive for a life of meaning. The education program utilized theory and practice by providing an experiential base to deeply understand the value of religious harmony and the practice of living a life for the sake of others. This experience included participants waking early and going out to work on repairing a children's camp and facilities used by the poorest in the community. Each participant could also visit a temple, church and mosque and hear from the religious representatives and reflect on the various approaches religions offered to improve society.
Various speakers were brought in to share about the local situation and especially the issues that affect youth. TV and radio coverage and visit from political, social and religious leaders added to the variety of the program.
