Lan jia chun, China –The project was held in the village of Lan jia chun, where a small kindergarten was in the process of being built. A chief workman was on hand to give advice to the RYS participants and the trainers who helped to paint the walls of the half-built kindergarten and pulled the weeds out of a basketball playground. In the meantime the China students cleared the worksite of bricks and scattered planks lying around.
For both foreign and Chinese students it was a first attempt at cross-cultural learning. We visited the nearby Long Wan Bien village to donate clothing. Since it is a poor village, donations of any kind are always welcomed. We were made aware of the poor educational facilities available for children in the village. Many families are too poor to afford to send two children to school. A donation of 1000 yuan was made on behalf of friends from Hongkong, to enable two bright children to go to school. The children's mother came personally to give thanks. Others contributed some money toward the building of the kindergarten, which has yet to be completed.
