Meeting with Head of Cote d'Ivoire's Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire - The UPF board met with the President of Cote d'Ivoire's Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Oct. 18, 2011 to discuss about UPF's contribution to the ongoing programs.

In the first round of presidential elections in 2010, Alassane Ouattara placed second. In the second round, he faced incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo; the result was disputed, with both Ouattara and Gbagbo claiming victory. After months of unsuccessful negotiations and sporadic violence, the crisis entered a critical stage as Ouattara's forces seized control of most of the country, with Gbagbo entrenched in Abidjan, the country's largest city. International organizations reported numerous instances of human rights violations by both sides. Gbagbo was taken into custody after a raid into his residence on 11 April, and Quattara officially assumed office on May 11.

Charles Konan Banny, who had served as Prime Minister from 2005 and 2005 was assigned to the great task of reconciliation. The 11 members of the Commission were assigned to their mission by the President at the beginning of October in the auditorium of the Peace Foundation in Yamoussoukro.

Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire and Humanitarian Coordinator Ndolamb Ngokwey has been meeting with officials and working to in the priority areas of social cohesion, reconciliation and security.

To contribute to the reconciliation process, UPF-Cote d'Ivoire is offering to train trainers who can disseminate the five universal principles of Ambassadors for Peace as well as the teachings about conflict resolution.

After the war, there are still strong resentments among some people, who are convinced that former president Gbagbo will return to rule the country.

Mr. Banny was briefed about UPF's activities internationally and nationally and given a copy of the autobiography of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon. He responded by saying he is interested in learning more about ways UPF can participate.

The meeting opened with prayer and closed with prayer.
