Address to World Summit 2020, Seoul, Korea, February 3-8, 2020
I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome to the journalists from all over the world who have come from neighboring Asia, as well as America, Europe and Africa. I would like to express my deep gratitude to President Lee Byung-kyu of the Korean Association of Newspapers; Minister Park Yang-woo of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; and Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul City.
As you have seen in the previous video, this event, co-hosted by Segye Ilbo, The Washington Times and Sekai Nippo, is a ground for discussion of the role and mission of the media for world peace. I myself, representing the media, am surprised at today’s rapidly changing media environment and how lightly media information is valued by people. Through the Internet and mobile devices, information travels at the speed of light. How great it would be if this information could bring peace and reconciliation. However, it is often the source of conflict and distrust between neighbors, people and countries. At times like this, everyone here will agree that the mission and responsibility of the media are important.
Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, founders of Segye Ilbo, Sekai Nippo, and The Washington Times, emphasized the role of journalists, more than anyone else, to practice interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values. They said, "The responsibility of the media is very important in determining whether today’s world is at peace or at war." Since1978, they hosted the World Media Conference and continuously emphasized the freedom and peace of the press.
The media should be at the forefront of forming public opinions and guarding against conflict and violence, thereby protecting peace. The World Media Conference has contributed greatly to promoting the role of the media, in the direction of free media, responsible media, and moral media. As you can see, the World Media Conference has a deep root in history. In particular, this year's conference was launched in the name of the International Media Association for Peace with the special interest and support of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. We will discuss the need for drastic technology and media innovation for the new era while considering the fundamental nature and mission of journalism. The productive and creative discussions of all of us here will serve as a great foundation for a sustainable, peaceful world.
Dear media representatives from around the world! We media representatives should gather the wisdom of all those who aspire for peace and take the lead in realizing the ideals of a global community. We hope to strengthen our solidarity and friendship to establish and spread freedom, responsibility, and true values of the press, starting from today’s launch of the International Media Association for Peace. I would like to end these remarks with heartfelt gratitude to all media representatives and distinguished guests from home and abroad for attending today’s launching of the International Media Association of for Peace.
