Buenos Aires, Argentina—“Peace Values in Times of Crisis” was the theme of a Zoom-webinar panel of parliamentarians on June 26 organized by the Argentina chapter of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) and UPF-Argentina. Speakers included National Senator Silvia Giacoppo, National Deputies Victoria Morales Gorleri and Fabio Quetglas, Mercosur Parliamentarian Fernanda Gil Lozano, and Provincial Deputy Rosío Antinori. The moderator was Humberto Benedetto, Mercosur Parliamentarian in Córdoba. The issues covered were the five lines of action of IAPP-Argentina: Education and Values, Dignity and Human Rights, Governance and Transparency, Development and Cooperation, and Environment and Sustainability.
After the presentations, there was a Q&A session coordinated by communicator Patricia Pitaluga, president of Acercando Naciones, and journalist Adrián De Angelis, president of UPCAM, both of them Ambassadors for Peace. Simão Ferabolli, secretary general of UPF-South America, gave a brief speech, and Miguel Werner, secretary general of UPF-Argentina, opened the webinar by showing a video about the IAPP launch in Argentina, as well as its general coordination. There were more than 180 connections during the meeting, mainly from Argentina and Brazil but also from other Latin American countries and regions.
This was the beginning of a series of Zoom webinars organized by UPF with different areas of leadership that were represented during Korea’s World Summit. In the following months, we will have panels with religious people, journalists, academics, and business people. We will also have a special series of programs with parliamentarians who will deepen IAPP-Argentina’s lines of action: Education and Values, Dignity and Human Rights, Governance and Transparency, Development and Cooperation, and Environment and Sustainability.

Parliamentarians Panel: “Peace Values in Times of Crisis” IAPP/UPF-Argentina
GOAL:
IAPP seeks to unify knowledge, experience and good practices from legislators and other fields to face the critical challenges of humanity and the planet: poverty and corruption, violence and extremism, pollution and climate change, educational crisis and family breakdown, ethical and religious conflicts, the threat of “new wars,” the world refugee crisis, territorial disputes, and so forth.
In such a daunting context, which could eventually deepen issues and conflicts in times of Covid-19, panelists provide their insight, addressing issues from IAPP lines of action since its launch in Argentina: Education and Values, Dignity and Human Rights, Governance and Transparency, Development and Cooperation, and Environment and Sustainability. These are in accordance with the peace perspective posed by UPF from the premises of Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity and Universal Values.
CONTEXT:
How can we claim the transformative role of politics, particularly of parliamentarians as representatives of the people, to propose and promote solutions to local and global issues and conflicts?
How can we overcome old dichotomies and struggles from sectors, including national and individual selfishness, avoid more separation and facilitate dialogue and mutual respect in order to work for the dignity of each individual and seek the common good?
Which are the innovative answers to countless challenges and the opportunities we currently have to think about: sustainable development, reducing social and global conflicts, and restore a good relationship with the environment?
BACKGROUND:
The “Parliamentarians for Peace” initiative was set in 2001 through Ambassadors for Peace seeking to empower a leadership that allows dialogue and cooperation for sustainable development from a peace perspective. Such vision was reaffirmed in 2005, in the 120-country world tour by the founders in order to establish UPF, which created various peace projects and programs. According to this proposal, in 2016, the IAPP was launched globally. The South American regional IAPP was launched on October 11, 2016, in Asunción (Paraguay) and on November 30, 2017 in Argentina, at the National Senate.
