Dialogue & Alliance: Toward a Unified World of Peace

New York, USA—The 2021 summer issue of Dialogue & Alliance, a journal of UPF, is now available. The theme of this issue is “Toward a Unified World of Peace” featuring words given at the Rally of Hope series.
During the year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Universal Peace Federation, like many other non-governmental organizations, adapted by continuing its programs by using a wide range of virtual platforms. These include the “Peace Talks” webinar series that featured more than 200 webinars in 2020, and, with the use of highly advanced digital technology, the Rally of Hope Series. UPF produced four programs in the Rally of Hope Series in 2020 and, as of the date of this publication, one in 2021.
The Rally of Hope Series is dedicated to bringing together world leaders from a wide variety of fields—government, academia, religion, civil society, business—to offer their reflections on the current challenges we face, and to propose constructive, innovative recommendations for moving forward toward a more peaceful unified world. Each Rally has its own unique character, expressed through the individual speakers, but the overarching theme was to move Toward a Unified World of Peace: Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity and Universal Values. With this in mind, there were special points of emphasis such as that of addressing the disruptive effects of the pandemic, or promoting interreligious cooperation, or exploring prospects for peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula.
This issue of Dialogue and Alliance consists of the statements presented during the 2020 Rally of Hope Series, featuing current and former heads of state and government, parliamentarians, religious leaders, business leaders, and academicians. This interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral approach to peace is the unique trademark and, indeed, the defining characteristic of the Universal Peace Federation, and its family of primary associations. In Memorium: Richard L. Rubenstein
A dear friend of Dialogue and Alliance and the wider UPF community, Dr. Richard L. Rubenstein, age 97—world-renowned author, rabbi, scholar, university president—passed away on May 16, 2021. Dr. Rubenstein was ordained as a rabbi at Jewish Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. in history of religion at Harvard Divinity School. He served as Charles E. Merrill Professor of Humanities at the University of Pittsburgh, and as Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Religion at Florida State University. Dr. Rubenstein became the president of the University of Bridgeport in 1995. Among his many books, perhaps After Auschwitz stands among the most memorable, addressing the crisis for theology presented by the horrific reality of the holocaust. His wisdom, scholarly rigor, penetrating mind, fearless pursuit of truth, impacted the lives of millions around the world. Richard Rubenstein was committed to interfaith dialogue and served as a member of the Dialogue and Alliance Editorial Board since its inception in 1987. He will be greatly missed. His legacy and historic contributions to peace live on.
The International Summit Council for Peace and the International Associa-tion of Parliamentarians for Peace are projects of the Universal Peace Fed-eration. ISCP is a network of current and former heads of state and heads of government. The ISCP contributions to this volume were presented both during the Opening Plenary and during a series of sessions chaired by H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria and Chairman of ISCP Africa. The ISCP presenters come from many different nations and geographic regions and their collective wisdom and experience are substan-tial and impressive, as is reflected in their contributions to this volume.
A significant project of the ISCP is the International Association of First Ladies for Peace (IAFLP). IAFLP was also prominently featured during World Summit 2020, and a section of this volume is devoted to the presen-tations from the IAFLP sessions. The IAFLP participants included first la-dies and prominent women leaders from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. The IAFLP benefits from the support of the Women’s Federa-tion for World Peace, a partner of the Universal Peace Federation.
The second set of articles in this volume are drawn from the World Sum-mit 2020 sessions of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace, a global network of several thousand current and former members of congress, including many who serve or have served as presidents or speakers of their national parliaments or legislative assemblies. The IAPP, during this period of the Covid-19 pandemic has been working to develop an “early warning system” for pandemics, in an effort to avoid or mitigate the impact that pandemics have on the world’s peoples. The International Co-Chairs of the IAPP are Hon. Dan Burton of the USA and Hon. Jose De Venecia of the Philippines.
The Sunhak Peace Prize is a prestigious peace prize that has been presented since 2015 to persons who have made very substantial contributions to ef-forts to prevent climate change, to promote food security, to improve healthcare, especially in conflict zones, to provide education for women and girls, to help in bringing an end to extreme poverty, and to strengthen mul-tilateral and global institutions. The recipients of the 2020 Sunhak Peace Prize are former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President Macky Sall of Senegal, and Bishop Munib Younan, former President of the World Lutheran Federation, each eminently worthy of such a significant award. Their acceptance speeches are included in this volume.
