S.K. Chung: Address to Rally of Hope VI

Address to Rally of Hope VI
May 9, 2021

Respected Leaders both at home and overseas, I am very pleased to meet you today. My name is Sae-kyun Chung, former prime minister of the Republic of Korea. I would like to offer my sincere congratulations on the inauguration of Think Tank 2022.

I have heard that today is the first day for domestic and foreign leaders to gather their common will and heart for the long journey to the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula and the realization of world peace. As we go through the COVID-19 crisis that has struck the world, we come to reflect on the global environment, on our human civilization, and on the promise of the future. This is a crisis that cannot be overcome through the leadership of one individual or one nation alone.

Indeed, it will be impossible to surmount this crisis with exclusive, nation-centered egoism. International cooperation and solidarity are needed now more than ever. The problem of the Korean Peninsula, one of the only divided areas of the world, is no longer one that affects just the two Koreas.

Peace on the Korean Peninsula is indispensable for lasting world peace. Achieving this will require international attention and effort. Based on this, I hope that Think Tank 2022, which is being inaugurated today, will stimulate advances in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the world. Thank you for your attention.

H.E. Chung Sye-kyun was prime minister of South Korea from 2020 to 2021.
