Address to Rally of Hope VI
May 9, 2021
I bring warm greetings from the people and government of El Salvador. We thank Rev. Moon and Dr. Moon for organizing this Sixth Rally of Hope and for inviting us to be part of this journey.
In El Salvador we are celebrating a new period of hope. There was a civil war lasting more than twelve years in which the people of El Salvador suffered greatly, with eighty thousand dead, seven thousand missing, and more than a million displaced. The nation’s infrastructure, including electrical infrastructure and manufacturing facilities, was severely damaged. Finally, Peace Accords were signed in 1992, and today, thirty years later, we have to accept that we had misused resources and time, and above all destroyed the hope of a people who wanted to rebuild the country after the war.
El Salvador has shown, from the two years of President Bukele’s government, that in a real sense, a new era is beginning, an era of transformation when peace and hope will no longer be a fantasy, but when they are becoming the reality.
We have also fought the COVID pandemic with boldness, energy and determination, which is why we are one of the few countries on the continent that can demonstrate positive results in managing the pandemic. The World Health Organization reported that the two countries that have best managed the pandemic in the Americas have been Uruguay and then El Salvador. This fills us with pride.
So friends from El Salvador, we want you to join us in this new adventure, in a democratic culture, an adventure in which the Salvadoran people recover their dignity and become the initiators of their own history.
I thank you very much for allowing me to share this with you on this occasion. I send a hug to everyone on behalf of the people and the government of El Salvador.
Hon. Félix Ulloa has been the vice president of El Salvador since 2019.
