Family Fun Day Raises Money for Hospital in Watford

Inspired by their participation in a Family Fun Day in 2007, the Muslim Awareness Forum organized a Family Fun Day in Watford, England, on August 10 to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Many families in Watford have benefited from this highly-regarded children’s hospital.

Last August, following the initiative of a Muslim woman, Syeda Shah, the Watford Women's Federation for World Peace Bridge of Peace coordinated a Family Fun Day to raise funds to support the victims of the floods in the UK. The Mayor of Watford gave her full support by contacting Hull, printing publicity, and coming on the day.

This year, the Muslim Awareness Forum asked for help from the Watford Bridge of Peace in contacting other local groups. The Bridge of Peace also took care of four stalls on the day: the drinks and cakes stall, a stall where children could make greeting cards, and stall where people could learn to make origami. Both the origami birds and best wishes cards will be given to the children at the hospital. Volunteers from the Bridge of Peace also helped at the bric a brac stall.

Due to the weather, most of the activities took place inside the hall. The mayor came at the end of the afternoon to draw the winning raffle ticket and give a short speech.

The Watford Bridge of Peace raised around £250 that was donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Appreciation is given to the women and families who came to help: Frank Vanderstock who volunteered at the drink stall; Chikako Raineri, Naomi Ngyoten, Ryoko Allen, and Kimie Simon who taught origami; and Chris LeBas who helped the children make cards.

It seems that a new tradition is beginning in Watford of charity events in which the various communities of the town come together. In partnership with the Muslim Awareness Forum and hopefully with other local organizations, the Bridge of Peace wants to plan an event for next year and get more people involved.
