Promoting a Vision for Service in the Urals

Perm, Russia - A round-table discussion on November 22 about how NGOs can contribute to better international and interreligious relations provided an opportunity to describe UPF-Eurasia's regional peace initiatives.

The forum on how social service by religious organizations, national and cultural associations, and international NGOs can promote cultural development and harmonious international and interreligious relations took place at the Gorky Library in this city near the Urals Mountains. Initiated by the NGO “Perm – Oxford,” the event was attended by representatives of state authorities, religious groups, national Diasporas, grassroots initiatives, school teachers, professors, and librarians.

Thanks to such an expanded quorum, the participants gained information about a large number of interesting and significant projects. Each organization that described its programs has substantial experience in their field, and a great diversity of activities were presented.

The leader of UPF-Urals, Natalya Yerofeeva, made an impact on the work of the round table. In her report “Multilateral Cooperation as an Effective Method of Establishing a Culture of Peace,” she talked about UPF's approaches to interreligious and international problems and some concrete projects that address them. She gave as examples the World Interreligious Harmony Week and UPF-Eurasia's Baltic Dialogue and South Caucasus Peace Initiatives. The local project “Urals – Georgia: We’ll Be Friends” has been supporting the South Causasus Peace Initiative for the past three years. She emphasized its multilateral approach and the cooperation. The round table gave participants a significant opportunity to expand their knowledge about peacemaking, learn from the experiences of others, and stimulate further interactions and partnerships.

The Universal Peace Federation would like to express its appreciation to the initiators of the round table, NGO “Perm – Oxford” (leader: G.I. Gusarova) and the House of Friendship of Perm (chair of the board: I.V. Lezhnyova), for choosing this timely theme.

A major administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center in the European part of Russia, Perm has a population of nearly a million people.
