An Evening of Solidarity in Bratislava Raises Funds for Charity

Bratislava, Slovakia - An "Evening of Solidarity" on Oct. 18, 2011, at the Zichy Palace in Bratislava featured presentations about two charitable projects: support for the Women’s Federation for World Peace tsunami relief in Japan and an International Relief Friendship Foundation project in Kenya carried out in cooperation with UNESCO.
Seiko Kawashima Jakubacova spoke about her experiences visiting her home town of Sendai, which was near the epicenter of the earthquake that struck northern Japan last March. Only two weeks after the tsunami disaster, the Women’s Federation in Slovakia organized a Japanese cultural evening and collected money for the victims.
In the summer Mrs. Jakubacova travelled to Japan and delivered the donations to the leader of the Women's Federation in Sendai. She did this because donations often do not reach their final destination or much of the money is lost as passes through various institutions. In this case 100 percent of the donations were given to the tsunami victims.
The second part described the project to build a Community Centre in Kibwezi, in southern Kenya. Two young Slovak sisters, the Zuzana and Eva Vaskova, had volunteered in activities there. Zuzana gave a lively report with many pictures about their ten-day stay in Kenya. They had brought school supplies and money to buy medical supplies for the children of Kibwezi. The Slovak volunteers were shocked by the poor living conditions in the village and the lack of educational materials in the local school. They wished they could have brought more aid and more helpers with them.
At the end of the event all three volunteers received an Ambassador for Peace certificate from the hands of Mr. Igor Koromhaz, Vice President of UPF-Slovakia. Participants in the program gave donations for both of these projects.
