Chitwan, Nepal - With the help of the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center and the local community of Ramnagar, UPF-Nepal organized a free health check-up program in Chitwan on March 11. Over 750 people benefited from this clinic. The vast majority were very poor and could not have afforded the cardiac consultation and treatment.
Expensive tests such as electrocardiograms and echocardiograms were offered gratis to all people in this district of south-central Nepal. Senior cardiologist Dr. Ravi Malla headed up a team of 16 medical personnel who serve people in that rural area. Dr. Malla said, “Ninety percent of the people examined were found in need of cardiac care. I’ve never experienced this before in any such clinic.” The heart is a vital organ of the human body, so awareness and preventive care are essential for good health.
The district police office, the Nepal Army, local scout units, community leaders, Ambassadors for Peace, and youths actively supported the program. The clinic was inaugurated by Mrs. Laxmi Thakuri, a 105-year-old woman. Retd. District Inspector General of Police Gyanendra Bikram Mahat, an Ambassador for Peace, and Mr. Sandeep Mahat coordinated and financially supported the program. UPF-Nepal President and MP Hon. Ek Nath Dhakal thanked all those who made possible this valuable service.
