Port Vila, Vanuatu—UPF-Vanuatu has given solar batteries to women in areas where there is no electrical power supply.
The batteries were purchased by the Australian chapter of Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP), an international organization that is affiliated with UPF, as part of its “Island Lights Project.”
The members of WFWP-Australia held a “walk-a-thon” in the spring of 2015 to raise funds to purchase solar lights for women villagers who needed them in order to run home-based businesses and to allow their children to study at night.
UPF has long done service work and collected donations for the women and children in Vanuatu. UPF representatives created the New Village Movement, a self-reliance movement, building a small school library and donating sewing machines.
On June 1, 2015, Mr. Jong Deug Yoo, the coordinator of the New Village Movement for Vanuatu, distributed the solar batteries to a number of women villagers.
