Sports Programs

Sports Educators Lead Basketball Camps

Tierra Nueva, Guatemala - More than 200 children participated in a special sports activity led by two sports educators, Diesa Seidel and Janna Gullery, as well as by Mr. Luis Navarro, coordinator of Moving Dreams, a project of Pro Paz. This took place in the Settlement Tierra Nueva 1 in Guatemala.

Ms. Seidel, an international educator, facilitated the activity and taught several basic techniques of basketball. The children of the school were very cheerful and happy to have had that time; they were anxious to show off their own skills in the game. Also, in describing the importance of sports and physical activity for human beings, Ms. Seidel explained that one exercises the mind at the same time as the body. One could see the eyes of some of the children light up after that explanation, because they thought they might get away with playing when told to do their homework by explaining, “but this helps me to exercise my mind for my studies!”

Moving Dreams has initiated a sports program in Guatemala, with the goal of creating a culture of peace through physical activities, sports, and recreational activities. At this time the coordinator, Luis Navarro, invited and made preparations for the sports educators to come and share their experience while getting a sense of the national situation in Guatemala. He explained to Ms. Seidel and Ms. Gullery that this school has a total of 35 sections and approximately 45 children per section, and that only 10 sections receive sports lessons. He also said that although this is not uncommon in Guatemala, it is still his desire to work together with other organizations and institutions to create a national sports program. After talking to Luis Navarro, Ms. Seidel gave several basketballs to him to use in his continued efforts and activities, thereby showing their continued support and hope for the success of this project in the future.
