EuroPhoenix Football Workshop in Austria

The European football team EuroPhoenix came together for a football workshop in Seebenstein, Austria. In total, 35 young adults gathered in the seminar center from July 19 to 24, 2008.
EuroPhoenix was founded two years ago with young people connected to UPF’s network in Europe. Of course, the logistics became a bit of a challenge. A team with members from more than ten countries in Europe cannot simply meet weekly for training. Therefore, the organizers started to hold football training workshops at different locations in Europe. Every workshop was held at a different location to give people near that location the chance to participate as well to offer people from other countries the experience of traveling to a foreign country. In the last two years, workshops were held in England, Germany, France, and Austria.
The highlight for the EuroPhoenix team occurred in 2007 when the team participated in the Interreligious Peace Sports Festival (IPSF) in Korea. As a final preparation, the team trained at a workshop in Germany and then flew together as one group to Korea.
In 2008, EuroPhoenix recruited new members with the goal of participating in the next IPSF in 2009. The workshop in Austria was another step closer to that goal. In order to better prepare the players, as well as to inspire them, I was invited to come to the workshop to give a presentation about new developments in the program.
Many of the participants showed great interest in the work and the projects related to the IPSF; they felt inspired to do research in their own nation about the possibilities of holding local athletic competitions.
Everyone is looking forward to participating in future festivals.
