Dushanbe, Tajikistan - On the eve of the Independence Day, the Universal Peace Federation together with the Tajikistan Peace Foundation participated in the celebration that was held in the Protection Center for children, refugees and socially vulnerable citizens. The event was organized by refugee children, some of them orphans. They created drawings on the theme of peace and prepared a performance. Prizes were awarded to children who made outstanding drawings.
The event was attended by the deputy ambassador of France and his wife and by representatives of the Tajikistan Peace Foundation. Rakhmanova Mavjuda, director of the Refugee Center, was the moderator of the program.

Note: After declaring independence from the USSR on September 9, 1991, Tajikistan suffered from a devastating civil war, which lasted from 1992 to 1997. The fighting in the central Asian republic was among factions based on clan loyalties. The estimated dead numbered over 100,000. Around 1.2 million people became refugees inside and outside of the country.
