Proposal for a Bering Strait Crossing
While the Internet links people the world over on an information super-highway, there is no highway with bridges and tunnels to connect all the continents. With advances in technology, engineers have been studying the feasibility of a tunnel under the 85km Bering Strait. Visionaries and pragmatists alike are excited by the the prospects.
- Goal: An international transportation system that can draw together people of all races, cultures, religions, and nationalities in one peaceful and prosperous global community.
- Method: Build a Bering Strait crossing that can facilitate exchange of people and goods between Asia and the Americas and link up to other networks.
The idea for a crossing, first proposed more than 100 years ago, was championed by UPF Founder Dr. Sun Myung Moon during his Peace Tours of 2005 and 2006 as part of his vision vision for a global transportation network. The yellow line indicates a potential route between the closest rail links on both sides. Brown lines are oil pipelines.

A project of this size could only move forward as part of a combined international effort of will, and the USA and Russia, as well as Europe and China, have been preoccupied with other issues, including economic crises. Yet, the construction costs are small compared to the costs of all the conflicts in the world. For an April 9, 2012 article in the Moscow Times about a potential Bering Strait crossing, click here.
"For the sake of peace and human welfare, and also for building God’s fatherland and original hometown, I propose that we build a passage for transit across the Bering Strait, that remnant of historical division between east and west, and north and south, and where the North American and Russian land-masses are separated. This passage, which I call the “World Peace King Bridge and Tunnel,” will link an international highway system that will allow people to travel on land from Africa’s Cape of Good Hope to Santiago, Chile, and from London to New York, across the Bering Strait, connecting the world as a single community." - Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, Founder, Universal Peace Federation
