Universal Peace Federation Presents UN Global Day of Parents Program

“Mothers and Fathers: Essential for Societal Stability and Flourishing”

June 1, Thursday, 1:15 – 2:30 PM EST - Virtual

Co-sponsor: Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations

Background:

Universal Declaration, Article 26-3.43 “Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”

Children’s Summit, 18.74 “The family has the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children from infancy to adolescence. Introduction of children to the culture, values, and norms of their society begins in the family. For the full and harmonious development of their personality, children should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding. Accordingly, all institutions of society should respect and support the efforts of parents and other caregivers to nurture and care for children in a family environment.”

It is well established that education is critical for the advancement of a country. Governments understand their responsibility to promote and provide education for their citizens. What voice should parents have in the kind of education provided to their children? What is the role that parents need to take to ensure their children develop not just academically but emotionally, socially, morally, and spiritually to be good citizens?

Research affirms that parents have a fundamental and unique ability for fostering integrity and pro-social capacities in their children. Mothers and fathers tend to have different gifts which benefit a child’s development, especially when in a complementary, healthy, and collaborative family. Experts will discuss the role of parents in their children’s education and optimal human development.
