Does one need a catastrophe such as World War I or World War II? Or a third catastrophe, such as the Cold War? Or a fourth catastrophe, which we are experiencing in this moment, which is the economic crisis, to incite us to reform the outdated and anachronistic international institutions?

The breakdown of the family, or threats to the family from any direction, is in fact a menace to society as a whole. This is certainly the case in my own nation of Guinea, but I believe it is equally true for all the countries represented here at the United Nations.
Marriage is noble and sacred, a social contract that confers mutual obligations on the couple and society. The progress and welfare of society, or its breakdown, can be traced to the strengths and unity, or the lack of it, in the family. This also applies to civilization.
The state of Qatar has been an important actor in strengthening the family as the basic unit of society. For example, we hosted the Doha International Conference on the Family in 2004 and the subsequent adoption of the Doha Declaration on the Family.
As we breathe in and out, do you see that we are sharing the same breath? We are not only members of one breath, we are not only members of one energy field, we are not only members of an emotional field, we are one consciousness that has differentiated into all these consciousnesses.
The family is a haven of intimacy, love, and trust, providing fulfillment. The mother provides a nurturing atmosphere to raise children as long as there is love, “quality time” spent with children, emotional support, and a stable economic environment.
There is no more important task that to work to strengthen the family, the institution whereby we not only reproduce the human species but educate, nurture, and train the members of our species to be truly human, that is, beings who aspire to and achieve the highest levels of moral, spiritual, and professional excellence.
As we build good marriages and strong families, we can transform this world, as families become the agents of development and social transformation for peace in this world.
