Caracas, Venezuela - A celebration of the UN International Day of Families in the Credicard Tower of Chacaito on May 22 brought together about 50 leaders from various fields of society. The theme was: "Marriage and Family: World Peace Is Close at Hand."
The Secretary General of UPF-Venezuela, Mr. Jesus Navarro, led the meeting as the Master of Ceremonies. Words of welcome were offered by the President of the Metropolitan Council, Max Sanchez. Then Ms. Melba Sanchez, Ambassador for Peace, spoke of the important role of women in society. Juan Quintana, President of the Student Center at Alexander von Humboldt University, moved the audience with his testimony and claim that world peace is close at hand: "We just have to make the necessary decisions," he said. Dr. Maria Gabriela Tomasini, president of the Women's Federation for World Peace in Venezuela, spoke on marriage and family as the foundations of a prosperous society of peace and happiness, full of opportunities for everyone. Ms. Deliana Torres, Regional Director of the Institute of Women of Miranda State, claimed that women's values are fundamental building blocks for the progress of the family and community. Finally, Derwin Morillo, Secretary General of the Foundation Venezuela Incorruptible is Possible (Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles-Venezuela), closed by reading UPF's Declaration of Families in support of the UN International Day of Families.
When the presentations were finished, awards were given to couples who have been married more than 20 years, and a Medal of Peace was presented to a couple who has been married more than 40 years. Also, new Ambassadors for Peace were appointed.
One of the most moving moments was when couples shared their testimony of the love they invested during their years of marriage to nurture, enhance, and fill their families with happiness. This revealed the depth and power of love in the family that can transform society and build a peaceful world.
