There is great anticipation of the peace festival to be held October 18 in Korça, which is being organized by many political dignitaries and renowned citizens, as well as dozens of political, educational, and commercial organizations. It has a twofold purpose.
(1) to promote, implement, and celebrate ongoing programs that bring together people of every race, religion, ethnicity, and culture, in accordance with the motto: “Mankind one family, the world one home.”
(2) to build a world of lasting peace and development through strengthening marriages and families; facilitating intercultural, inter-ethnic and interreligious cooperation; and fostering a culture of peace and service.
Among the political, religious, and social leaders advising the Organizing Committee are: H. E. Alfred Mosiu—Former President of Albania, Hon. Alexander Biberaj—Deputy President of European Parliamentarian Assembly, Mrs. Lavdie Ruci—Chairman of UPF-Albania and President of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Niko Peleshi—Mayor of Korça, Mr. Dhionis Kotmilo—Former Mayor of Korça, Dr. Ilir Kulla—Adviser to the President of Albania, Prof. Flamur Shehu—Director of the Cabinet and Minister of Culture, Prof. Dr. Suzana Turku—Deputy Minister of Culture, Mr. Ermir Gjinshi—Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Community, Mr. Halit Muharremi—Former Mufti of Elbasan, and Mr. Dhimiter Orgocka and Prof. Fadil Kraja, who are both nationally honored artists.
The first set of events involves hundreds of young people who will plant trees in the city in accordance with the slogan “One pupil one tree.” The Greenery Company in Korça and all the schools in Korça will cooperate to accomplish this “social-impact” project.
The second set of events will occur in the form of an International Leadership Conference, which has been titled “Toward Leadership and Good Governance for Lasting Peace and Development in Albania and the Balkans.” This conference is being organized by the Universal Peace Federation in cooperation with Korça and Pogradec Municipalities, and it will be held at the hotel “Grand” Korça on October 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Many political, religious, and academic leaders, both national and international, and involved in many different areas of culture, have been invited. The conference is slated to address topics such as lasting peace, good governance, true leadership as rooted in the principle of living for the sake of others, and the nuclear family as the school both for practicing authentic and fully-dimensional love and for promoting world peace.
The third group of events constitutes the “Korça Main Event,” which is the Peace March. The first leg of the Peace March will begin in front of the Theater of Korça, gathering people who will walk to the Orthodox Cathedral where they will be able to enjoy 40 minutes of musical artistry. Well-known entertainers, including Anjeza Shahini, Alban Skenderaj, Mariza Ikonomi and Eneida Tarifa, will be on hand to offer inspirational musical performances for the crowd. After this, the march will commence its second leg, ending at the Sports Hall, which is able to accommodate 4,000 participants.
The final set of events includes four additional programs that will occur in the larger context of the Global Peace Festival. These are (a) a scientific conference addressing critical environmental concerns, (b) a Speech and Banner Contest, (c) a Peace Exhibition, and (d) a promotional event for new talents. The conference on the environment is titled “My City, My Home,” and its purpose is to elevate awareness of the dangers of environmental pollution as well as the need to expand the green areas of Korça to help alleviate such pollution. It is scheduled to begin October 15 and is being primarily sponsored by Korça University and Korça Municipality, which have invited 40 distinguished participants from local government, universities, and various scientific institutions.
The purpose of the Speech and Banner Contest is to encourage high school students in their aspirations to learn leadership skills and take leadership roles, especially in the context of seeking to establish peace at all levels of human society. The contest plans to involve 400 high school students in the competition, which will be held in the Theater of Korça.
The Peace Exhibition seeks to promote peace through the arts and will be on display in the Arts Gallery. Finally, the promotional event is intended to highlight talented individuals in various areas of culture who have been previously unrecognized but who show real potential to positively represent Albania on the worldwide level. This event will occur in the Cultural Hall.
