The Universal Peace Federation of Nepal launched The Universal Times, a fortnightly, bilingual (English and Nepalese) newspaper.
The purpose of the paper, according to the editor, Mr. Bindu Raj Adhikari, is to tap into the indigenous expertise of the Nepalese people and support the peace process.
“The Universal Times wants to contribute to building a peaceful Nepal,” said Mr. Adhikari. “We are non-partisan,” adding quickly, “We want to listen to the people, educate leaders and guide our nation from a parental perspective.”
The Universal Peace Federation awards outstanding citizens Ambassador for Peace certificates and asks them to contribute to peace-building using their own expertise. Currently, there are more than 2,100 Ambassadors for Peace covering all 75 districts of Nepal. Two Ambassadors for Peace have already become regular contributors to the new paper; others have been invited and are expected to join.
As editor, Mr. Adhikari brings extensive writing experience to TUT. He has been published in national papers, magazines, as well as local papers outside the Kathmandu valley. His topics include socio-economics as well as cultural pieces such as poems and short stories; his academic background is from science and biology.
Dr. Christopher Kim, the Continental Chairman of UPF-Asia, sent his congratulations. Reiterating the public purpose of the paper, he said this newspaper “ultimately supports universal peace,” adding, “it is the Nepalese people who have to institutionalize their regained peace.”
