Tokyo, Japan - On February 19, the fifth Peace Diplomats Forum was held in a hotel in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and nearly 50 participants attended. Among the participants were 31 diplomats including seven Ambassadors and Charge d’ Affaires from various countries, four Diet members, former Japanese Ambassadors to foreign countries, and academics.
In his welcoming address, Mr. Hideo Oyamada, Chair of UPF-Japan, expressed his appreciation to the 12 embassies in Japan that worked in partnership with the Universal Peace Federation. Mr. Oyamada then called on the participants for their continuous cooperation and participation in UPF’s activities for world peace under the theme of “One Family under God.”
Following guest remarks by a Diet member, Ms. Mitsuko Horiuchi, former Director of the UN International Labour Organization Office in Japan, gave a lecture on the theme of “Education and Poverty.”
“Since poverty is a cause of conflict, it is absolutely necessary to eradicate poverty if we are to end conflict,” said Ms. Horiuchi. Moreover, referring to Japan’s experience of eradicating child labor through promoting education nationwide, she emphasized the importance of “preparing an environment in which all children can attend school regularly.”
During the second session, three Diet members addressed the forum. After a beautiful musical performance, the participants enjoyed socializing with each other in a friendly atmosphere.
Ambassadors for Peace certificates were handed to the newly nominated Ambassadors for Peace by the Secretary General of UPF-Japan, Mr. Seiichi Kikuya. The nominees were H.E. Mr. HOR Monirath, Ambassador of Cambodia; Hon. Jean Claude Bordes, Charge d’Affaires of Haiti; Elibariki Maleko, Minister Counsellor of Tanzania; and Mr. Mohammad Ashor Azimi, Third Secretary and Consul of Afghanistan.
