Quito, Ecuador - Four hundred and sixty people attended the International Day of Families celebration on May 16 in the Quito City Hall. A UNICEF official, Dr. Juan Vásconez, gave an explanation about this special UN day honoring the family.

Gen. Holger Santana, a member of the UPF Global Peace Council and Executive Director of UPF-Ecuador, gave welcoming remarks, followed by a reading of UPF's Declaration of the International Day of Families by Lic. Elizabeth Sánchez, director of a kindergarten.

Messages about the importance of the family were given by Dr. Maritza Romero, a delegate of the General State Investigation Department; Lic. Miryan Valdivieso, principal of a high school; and Carmita Moreno, a teacher. Two Ambassadors for Peace, Pastor Germán Torres and Dr. Cecilia Vaca, director of an elementary school, served as masters of ceremonies.

The audience included political leaders, municipal officials, and representatives of various associations, foundations, and women's organizations. In addition, there were officials from the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, the General State Investigation Department, and the Ecuadorian Institute for Student Credit.

Entertainment was provided by the municipal band, a high school band, the Yanuncay Dance Group, and dancers from the Reino de Quito elementary school.
