HIV/AIDS Prevention Focus of Day of Families in Taipei

Taipei, Taiwan - Ambassadors for Peace came to support International Day of Families program on May 14 at the Peace Center in Taipei that featured programs of HIV/AIDS prevention and helping AIDS victims.

The Welcoming Address was given by Mr. Tuo Huan Chen, Vice President UPF-Taiwan. Then a movie about AIDS orphans, "The Blood of Yingzhou District," was shown helping people understand the theme of the day, “Confronting family poverty and social exclusion.” It won the 2007 Academy Award for the best documentary short subject.

The Secretary General of the Harmony Home Association-Taiwan, Ms. Nicole Yang, talked about her experiences taking care of HIV-positive children in Taiwan and Mainland China for more than 20 years. She gave first-hand information about how the AIDS patients suffer from sickness and social discrimination at a very young age.

The Secretary General of UPF-Taiwan, Mr. Moi Hsien Chai, gave a short presentation on “Addressing Poverty by Strengthening Families” and expressed UPF's response to the call of the UN to raise awareness of family issues worldwide and confronting poverty in Taiwan. He concluded with a briefing on the UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon's teachings on the principles of interdependence, working together for mutual benefit, and universally shared values as the ultimate solution for poverty.

In response, Dr. Chen said she was moved by the work of Ms. Yang and appealed to everyone to give donation to help AIDS patients. She said she totally agreed with the ideal of working together for mutual benefit in order to solve poverty. Ms. Hui Shiang Chuang responded that UPF and the Women's Federation for World Peace in Taiwan have been doing a lot of campaigning on AIDS prevention and countering drug abuse at schools and wished that more people could be trained as lecturers to support the work nationwide.
