Auckland, New Zealand - A gathering of over 100 people celebrated the UN International Day of Families with musical performances, sacred readings, and fellowship at the Jubilee Hall in Parnell, Auckland, on May 15.
Member of Parliament Su'a William Sio spoke about the importance of the family and the value of education. Secretary General of UPF-New Zealand Geoffrey Prentice presented an Ambassador for Peace certificate to Sikh leader Kanail Singh in recognition of his service to the community. An overview of UPF activities around the world in 2010 was shown, including consultations regarding the proposal for an interreligious council at the United Nations.
Musical entertainment included a children's choir from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a rendition of the Sikh anthem. Then Shim Gicole sang “We Are One Family.” The music communicated the power of love to transcend barriers, and the afternoon celebrations ended with refreshments and high-spirited conversation.
