Kigali, Rwanda - UPF-Rwanda, together with other partners, joined the rest of the world in marking the UN International Day of Families with a June 5 event in Kigali on the theme "The Family, a Building Block for World Peace."
Secretary General of UPF, Francis Makuuza, said that peaceful families are essential to sustainable peace in communities and the nation at large. "Peace must prevail right from our families," he said, calling such efforts of love and care the heart of being Ambassadors for Peace.
He also called upon the public to fulfill their responsibilities and uphold family commitments.
Another organization that participated in the event was the Women's Federation for World Peace-Rwanda chapter.
The organization's president, Georgette Umubyeyi, called for equal and fair treatment between spouses if the family is to have peace. "There cannot be peace or democracy unless women's voices are heard as well as creating the opportunity for them to take on responsibilities."
Speaking as the guest of honour, the Egyptian Ambassador to Rwanda, Khaled Abdel Rahman, noted that peaceful solutions to family and national issues are key steps towards promoting world peace.
