Georgetown, Guyana - Over 150 persons people attended an observance of the UN International Day of Families at the Family Federation chapel in Georgetown on May 15. The extra persons were accommodated under a tent erected on the lawn.
The guests were welcomed by UPF-Guyana Secretary General Ronald P. McGarrell, who was also the Master of Ceremonies. Prayers were offered by representatives from the Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities. The UN's theme for this year's observance, "The need for Work-Family Balance," was brought to the attention of everyone and followed by a video presentation about the UPF. The UN Secretary General's message was read, and printed copies were distributed to all participants.
Then a chapter entitled "True Love Is Found in True Families" from autobiography of UPF Founder Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon was read as guests followed along in the copy of the book given to them.
Additional information was given pertaining to the importance of marriage and family. The list of the 13 families to be presented with Family Certificates was read along with the names of the seven persons to be appointed as Ambassadors for Peace.
A child representing each family gave a brief synopsis about their family. This was a very interesting aspect of the program, and many parents were visibly moved especially when a child did not read from a prepared script but spoke from the heart.
Rt. Hon. Bishop Juan Anthony Edghill (Chairman of Outreach Ministries International, Member of Parliament, and Junior Finance Minister of Guyana) and his family, Hajji Roshan Khan (President of the Guyana Islamic Forum) and his family, and Patricia Greene (Deputy Mayor of Georgetown) and her husband were among the illustrious citizens present along with two Hindu priests (pandits) and their families.
Ambassador for Peace Mrs. Bernice Mansell, who had been married the longest (50 years) of everyone in attendance, presented the certificates to the families. Bishop Juan Edghill gave a response on behalf of the awarded families, and Hajji Roshan Khan gave the charge to the newly appointed Ambassadors of Peace.
After the congratulations and vote of thanks, everyone joined in singing the song "We Can Build an Ideal World." Refreshments prepared by members of the Family Federation were served.
