Penang, Malaysia - UPF-Penang organized a special parent-child program in conjunction with the UN International Day of Families’ theme “Ensuring Work-Family Balance” on June 24.
The event started punctually at 9:00 am at a park, Taman Jajar, Sri York. Present were the President of UPF-Penang, Mr. Khoo Kay Hean, and media partners such as The Star, Sin Chew Jit Poh, and Kwong Wah Yit Poh. There were altogether 170 participants, with parents bringing their children and relatives to join this special occasion.
The first program of the day commenced with the Parent-Child Dedication Competition. Parents were asked to complete a short questionnaire followed by some mini games. At the same time, children took part in a special drawing competition, dedicating the drawings to their parents. The drawings were pasted on the wall to be identified by their parents. Questions were asked to both children and parents in order to test their mutual understanding of each other. The top five winners were finally selected based on how well they understood each other. It is sincerely hoped that such a program can help parents and children elevate their understanding about each other, thus developing a closely-knit family relationship.
YB Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun, MP Jelutong, delivered a speech concerning the importance of a strong family relationship in this modernization era. As the breadwinners in the family, parents should work diligently to provide a better living environment for their family. Nevertheless, spending quality time with their family is equally important in order to cultivate a healthy family relationship. Also, communications between family members are pivotal and need to be given special attention to help all the family members understand each other better.
As a perfect closing for the event, several fortunate participants received attractive prizes from the lucky-draw competition.
Overall, the event was a huge success, thanks to the hard work by various parties and the many people who contributed their time and effort. It is hoped that through such International Day of Families events, parents and children can establish stronger family bonds.
