Stuttgart, Germany - To commemorate the UN International Day of Families, UPF-Stuttgart organized a May 11 program. The speaker was Rosemarie Tijsterman on the topic ‘The Five Languages of Love’, based on the book by Gary Chapman.

Patricia Wenzel opened the event by greeting the 25 participants and introducing the speaker. Rosemarie Tijsterman gave a short introduction to her topic and explained the great importance of continuous investment in relationships with those whom we love. In order to do this, one has to know the ‘Language of Love’ of one’s closest family and friends, and one must understand how to express love in a way that is understandable to these people.

Giving very concrete examples she explained the five languages of love as described by Gary Chapman:

  1. Many people need praise and recognition in order to be happy. ‘Words of affirmation’
  2. Others need togetherness. Time of undivided attention. ‘Quality time’
  3. For some people it is important to receive gifts, given from the heart. ‘Receiving gifts’
  4. For some people the way to ‘speak their language of love’ is by being helpful, for example, with small favors and ‘acts of service.’
  5. And others need mainly tenderness,’ physical touch,' in order to feel loved.

The presentation was followed by a refreshment break. During this time, there was opportunity for discussion on the topic.

In the second half, Rosemarie Tijsterman described a test that each could work on and then analyze him/herself. This was an interesting challenge whereby we could find out which of the five languages of love was ours. Knowledge about one’s own love language and that of those nearest to us has practical consequences and lightens and enriches life together.

Many thanks for the stimulating ideas!
