UN International Day of Families 2013

Day of Families Observed in Georgia

Tbilisi, Georgia - UPF-Georgia organized a number of educational programs celebrating the International Day of Families, including a poster contest, a quiz, and a forum.

The attention of the world community to family issues is growing year by year, and such events provide opportunities to raise awareness about the issues affecting the families. The theme of the day this year, "Advancing Social Integration and Intergenerational Solidarity," emphasizes that the family is the cornerstone of the global community and that connections between the generations help preserve memories from decade to decade.

From May 7 to 15, students at secondary school No. 136 participated in a creative contest of posters on the theme of "Family as Royalty," in which students were asked to portray the relations between family members in a glorious way. A high-quality poster is a powerful tool for impacting people who never thought much about the family as the school of love and altruism, the basis of any stable society and world peace. The posters were judged on the basis of their creativity, use of colors, originality of ideas, innovation, and artistic techniques.

On May 15 students in forms 5 through 10 participated in a quiz with questions about the family. They discussed the importance and value of the family for each person and recollected proverbs, sayings, poems, and songs related to the family. The most active participants received prizes and got the opportunity to participate in the interactive training on the Family as the School of Love.

Ambassadors for Peace and young activists discussed issues of moral uncertainty in the modern world at a May 18 meeting at the office of the NGO “Georgia in Support of Refugees." The theme of the meeting was especially timely after a demonstration in Tbilisi by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered activists the day before that received mixed responses.

The participants listened to the UN Secretary-General's message on the International Day of Families and learned about initiatives to unite different generations for the sake of building a prosperous world for all.

Ambassadors for Peace and young people concluded that true happiness and marital unity are achievable if husband and wife carry out their share of responsibility based on God's view of family life. The best preparation for establishing good families is chastity before marriage and fidelity in marriage.

The meeting ended in a solemn atmosphere as Vilen and Lamara Alavidze, who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their life together next year, cut the cake.
