Majuro, Marshall Islands - An International Day of Families event took place at the Long Islands Hotel of Majuro on May 15 with the attendance of members of Parliament and government officials, local government officials, and others.
The MC opened with an explanation of the background of the UN International Day of Families. A reading of the UPF Statement for the 2013 International Day of Families was given by Rev. Kenichi Ito, Chair of UPF-Marshall Islands. A reading of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon`s statement for the 2013 International Day of Families was given by Mr. Terry Keju, UN Representative in the Marshall Islands. A presentation by Hon. Alfred Capelle, former Ambassador to the UN, regarding “Advancing Social Integration and Intergenerational Solidarity,” offered insights into Marshall Islands' culture and tradition as well as the current situation. A congratulatory message was given by Mr. Phil Philippo, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communication and an Ambassador for Peace.
The second session included a PowerPoint presentation about the Family as the School of Love and Peace, by Rev. Ito, and a report of UPF's activities around the world on the International Day of Families in 2012. This was followed by comments by Mr. Gary Ueno, Secretary of the Ministry of Education and former school principal regarding problems such as students who drop out of school of because of pregnancy. A message was given by Senator and former Cabinet Minister Hon. Jiba Kabua regarding this year's theme combined with Marshall Islands' social culture, economy. and politics. Mr. Jim Philippo, Deputy Commissioner of National Police, gave comments comparing the cultures of the USA and Marshall Islands and noting the problem of youth crimes. Mr. Eldon Note, Assistant Attorney and former Bikini Atoll Mayor, commented about the family background of youth criminals.
Closing messages by the chair of UPF-Marshall Islands and Hon. Kabua were followed by cutting a celebration cake, dinner, questions and answers, and open discussion.
