Abuja, Nigeria - The National Merit Award House in Abuja was the site of an International Day of Families program on May 15. The keynote address on "Promoting Inter-ethnic Marriage as an Instrument for Social Integration" was presented by Dr. George Ikpot, executive director, UPF-Nigeria Office of UN/AU/ECOWAS/Foreign Missions Relations. He explained that marriages of people from different ethnic backgrounds can serve as a healing process from past enmity.

The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of Family Empowerment awards to individuals and organizations that have track records of empowering families, either through organizing and sponsoring family education programs, or providing employment opportunities, micro-loans, etc.; and Model Couple awards to couples who have been faithfully and peacefully married for more than 30 years and have successfully raised their children.
