Russians Respond to UN Human Development Report

Moscow, Russia - On October 5, the global presentation of the UN Report on Human Development in 2009 took place in various parts of the world. The title of the report was “Overcoming Barriers: Human Mobility and Development.” One of the locations where the report was presented to the public was the Moscow State University.
The Report was presented by Timothy Scott, a UN expert in preparing reports on human development, and Kori Udovichki, director of the UN regional bureau for CIS and European countries and an assistant to the UN Secretary-General. The latter estimated that by 2020 Russia will need about 20 million more workers and they will come from other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This will lead to violent inter-ethnic tensions, he predicted. Consequently, necessary measures should be taken to prevent conflicts. Special attention should be paid to an analysis of existing barriers to human mobility and the influence of the migration on the development of national economies. The Report contains recommendations about strategies and how to develop institutes to tackle issues of relocation, migration, and defending the rights of the migrants.
Dmitry Oficerov and Hayat Kutuyeva introduced UPF's peace initiatives to the UN representative in Russia, Frode Mauring, who was especially interested in the project of constructing a tunnel-bridge crossing of the Bering Strait and International Peace Highway. He asked to be informed of developments in UPF's peace initiatives.
The event was attended by representatives of the Russian Federation State Administration, foreign embassy officials in Moscow, international NGOs, media, and clergy.
