Elimination of Racial Discrimination Taught in Georgia

Tbilisi, Georgia - The Universal Peace Federation in partnership with the Union of Georgian Armenians "Nor Serund" organized a football tournament dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 19. The tournament began at a public playground and concluded at the sports complex.
About 20 Africans living in Georgia and 20 Georgians competed on the field, displaying fair play, honesty, and respect for each other in the spirit of Play Football Make Peace. They created lots of excitement. Many people from the local community watched the game with great interest; they decided to form a team and joined the competition. At the end, participants received certificates of participation.
This event gave a good opportunity for participants to get to know each other and make friendships through displaying their skills at football. This had a positive impact on the observers too.
On March 21 representatives of the African Union and UPF visited School #136, where a presentation about the Roots of Racism was given to the students in grade 9. The children were happy to listen about African culture and actively participated in discussions. They exchanged contact information with the guests in the expectation of continued communication. The students decided to conduct a project in the near future to address the problem of racism.
In partnership with the African Diaspora of Georgia, UPF conducted a discussion on a topic “Future without Racism” on March 27 at the National Youth Palace. About 40 young Georgians joined the program. The participants discussed the meaning of peace, roots of racism, and ways to eliminate it.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws." Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination (resolution 2142 (XXI)).
"Overcoming racism compels us to address public policies and private attitudes that perpetuate it," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "On this International Day, I call on Member States, international and non-governmental organizations, the media, civil society and all individuals to engage meaningfully in the promotion of the International Year for People of African descent – and to work together against racism whenever and wherever it occurs."
