UPF chapters in Australia and Japan sponsored forums in conjunction with the Women's Federation for World Peace on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. These included meetings in Sydney, Australia, on June 27 and in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan, on July 3 and 7.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has been observed annually since 1988 on June 26, a date chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu's dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, China just before the First Opium War (1839-42). The observance was instituted by UN General Assembly resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987.
