Khabarovsk, Russia - World Water Day was the theme of the lesson conducted by UPF activists at gymnasium №8 in Khabarovsk on March 22. The participants of the event spoke about importance of water for humans and nature. They listed the precious properties of water and enumerated the names of the largest natural fresh-water reservoirs. Finally, in order to draw attention to the necessity of a careful and responsible attitude towards water resources (rivers, seas, and oceans) and living organisms in them, the children created handmade designs of an octopus that dwells in the southern seas. Their work turned out to be creative and unique! The lesson was a great success!
On the initiative of the UN General Assembly, the World Water Day is celebrated each year on March 22. The idea of establishing this Day was first presented at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. One year later, in accordance with resolution 47/193, of 22 February 1993, the UN General Assembly declared March 22 World Water Day.
World Water Day is meaningful not only for promoting appropriate measures for solving the problem of supplying the population with drinking water but also for informing the public about the importance of protecting and preserving freshwater resources and water resources in general as well as being mindful of plants and animals living in the water. Governments of different nations, international agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector are involved in celebration of the World Water Day.
Khabarovsk is located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers, 30 kilometers from the Chinese border.
