Kiev, Ukraine - The regular meeting of Ambassadors for Peace on Dec. 17, 2013 was dedicated in commemoration of the International Human Solidarity Day, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. The Chairman of UPF-Ukraine, Mykhailo Ilin, stressed the importance of unity during this revolutionary time for Ukraine and avoiding division of the country.
It was the final meeting of the year 2013. All participants shared reports about their activities, and UPF presented its report as well.
The annual conference on the theme “The Ukrainian National Idea: Past, Present, and Future" was among the topics of discussion. The Oct. 18 event took place just before the mass protests started in Ukraine. It shows the importance of a national ideal of living for the sake of others. Participants felt that the annual conference was an effort to make a spiritual contribution to national solidarity. [For a report of the conference, click here.]
In 2005 The UN General Assembly identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples and established Dec. 20 as International Human Solidarity Day. "I urge people from all nations, faiths, cultures and traditions to work together in common cause to keep the promise made at the turn of the Millennium and leave a legacy of peace, prosperity and sustainable progress for generations to come," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on his message for International Human Solidarity Day 2013.
