New Delhi, India—The International Day of Yoga, commonly referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on June 21. The proposal to establish the Day was first introduced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2014, in which he said:
“Yoga is an invaluable gift [from India’s] ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”
Three months later, on December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 69/131, establishing the Day.
To mark the International Day of Yoga 2016, UPF and the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU)-India, an affiliated organization, co-organized an event in New Delhi.
The program, which was attended by 70 guests, included time for practicing meditation and yoga poses, as well as two short lectures: one on the benefits of practicing yoga and another on how yoga supports character development, which were given by Mrs. Paramjit Bindra, project director of the NGO Dedicated Social Action for Developing India (DADI), who came to the event with a yoga teacher from her community and the teacher’s students, and Dr. Parmod Mehra, an associate professor at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), respectively.
At the end of the program, Mr. Upkar Singh, a local community leader, thanked everyone for attending the event.
