A Peace March in Albania

Korca, Albania - Approximately 2,000 people joined a high-spirited peace march through the ancient Albanian city of Korça to mark the Global Peace Festival on October 18. Led by the Korça City Band and hundreds of Ambassadors for Peace, the throng of peace marchers headed for the main celebration in the Sports Hall.

New York, New York - If the International Relief Friendship Foundation can raise over $3,000 in scholarship funds from at least 75 different donors for Zambian students by November 21, it will have ongoing access to Global Giving's network of funders and partners.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - "Space has definitely changed my view on life," Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor told the packed and attentive audience at Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil stadium at the Global Peace Festival Malaysia on October 19. "When I was in space, I felt very sad," he said. "I saw how small, how perfect our planet really is, and then I reflected on all the conflict and suffering we cause each other. I started to be more concerned about the suffering of women and children, and I decided I had to do something about it."

Global Peace Festival Comes to New York

New York, NY - The Global Peace Festival is hosting an interfaith, intercultural celebration in New York City at 7:00 pm on October 23 at the historic Manhattan Center at 311 West 34th St, one of the city's most renowned performance venues. The event will celebrate the unparalleled ethnic and cultural diversity of the nation's largest city and include entertainment by a variety of musicians and dancers as well as messages of peace from diverse faith traditions.

Education, Service, and Sightseeing in Cote d'Ivoire

Amanvi, Ivory Coast - On September 14, Religious Youth Service completed its second 2008 project in Cote d'Ivoire, held in Amanvi in the eastern region of the country. Participants from the United States, Benin, and Cote d'Ivoire gave 70 youths the hope of being able to attend school. As in all underdeveloped countries, especially in the more remote villages, school facilities are not in good condition.

Promoting Peace in Germany at a Time of Globalization

Stuttgart, Germany - "What are the values that promote peace at a time of globalization?" was the theme of a September 27, 2008 UPF conference in Stuttgart, Germany. The setting was the Bella Barba restaurant, whose owner generously offered the hall and all the facilities for free. While the guests arrived, Nenad Butic from Munich played a couple of pieces on the classical guitar to get people in the spirit for this peace conference. After this welcoming reception, the chairman of UPF-Germany reported about the interfaith network in Geneva, Switzerland, where there is remarkable progress in interreligious and intercultural networking with the goal of putting peace into practice.

When the Global Peace Festival was supported by eight ministries of the government and other agencies, it opened the eyes of many people. I feel that with the support of the government we can accomplish a lot in what we do next. We had 2,500 young people coming for community service at one time, and they are asking, what next? Where are we going to have our next project? When will it be? This means that we have created interest in peace-building in many levels of society.

We know that the world is divided into people of different faiths, but basically the faith of all these religions is the same. Religions preach and promote peace and brotherhood. There is no religion which says that you should go forth and kill those who are not of your own faith. I’ve studied the Qur’an and I couldn’t find any verse which directs Muslims to kill non-Muslims. In fact, we are told to live at peace with peoples of other religions. Surah Al-Kahfirul refers to the different religions professed by different people, and says that you have to accept them—"to them their religion, to you your religion." It doesn’t say “to them their religion, and therefore you should fight them.”

Small Group in a Small Town sets Example for the World

Barrytown, NY - It started early this summer at the United Nations when Jeremy Gilley, the founder of Peace One Day, showed his powerful movie "The Day After," showing how in Afghanistan, one of the most war-ravaged countries, fighting stopped for one day. Peace for this one day, September 21, 2007, allowed UNESCO workers to travel to remote areas of the country and inoculate 1.3 million children against polio.

Children Observe a Moment of Silence for Peace

Tbilisi, Georgia - At noon, the program began with a silent meditation for ceasefire and world peace. Afterwards, participants exchanged hugs with the people around them. The Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Abkhazia and Ambassador for Peace Mrs. Dalila Khorava delivered the International Day of Peace message, calling for reconciliation and forgiveness. The children then listened to stories about famous peacemakers: M. Gandhi, N. Mandela, and M.L. King. With great enthusiasm, they answered peace-quiz questions; correct answers were awarded with prizes. The MCs were soon bombarded by the children. No one wanted to be merely an observer; everyone was extremely excited to participate in more games and contests.
