Empowerment of Women

15th Middle East Women's Peace Conference

Thessaloniki, Greece - The Women's Federation for World Peace International and its Japanese chapter organized the 15th Conference for Peace in the Middle East in Thessaloniki, Greece from May 24 to 27. Forty women from 20 countries of the Middle East, Europe, and the Far East gathered to discuss the theme "Women in War and Reconstruction." In addition there were representatives from five UN agencies: the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UN Resident Coordinator, UN Relief and Works Agency, International Organization on Migration, and UNICEF.

One of the City Councillors, representing  the Mayor of Thessaloniki, welcomed the participants. The various presentations dealt with the role and power that women have – if given the possibility - to promote peace and prosperity in a country affected by various conflicts.

At the closing of the conference the participants agreed on an Appeal to be distributed to the UN and to the different governments and national organizations.
