The empowerment of women was the theme of a panel discussion at the New York headquarters of the United Nations.
The Permanent Mission of Grenada hosted the dynamic meeting, "Women in Power: Making a Global Difference," on July 24, 2014, in Conference Room 1 of the UN. The meeting was organized by African Women for Good Governance and supported by the UNESCO Club of New York, African Working Women's Group, the Universal Peace Federation and many other NGOs.
His Excellency Ambassador Denis G. Antoine, permanent representative of Grenada to the UN, opened the session with a warm message about the unique gifts that women leaders bring to the world, while noting that many women still do not have the opportunity to contribute or even develop their capacities.
Mrs. Sire Dione Conde, president of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Peace Center, New York Chapter, spoke about some of the projects she has promoted to educate women in a variety of fields, resulting in positive empowerment and progress for women.
The large panel of speakers covered topics such as entrepreneurship, healthy living strategies, education, youth enrichment and cultural education. Representing the Universal Peace Federation, Mrs. Lynn Walsh spoke on the importance of young women learning how to have healthy relationships. She commented on research that shows women benefitting in all areas of life from stable, healthy marriages and families.
