South Caucasus Peace Initiative

The situation in the South Caucasus, especially after the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008, threatens international security and causes suffering. UPF's South Caucasus Peace Initiative addresses ideological, interreligious and humanitarian challenges in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Scroll down for reports.

Goals: Build understanding among the diverse groups in the region, promote collaboration among governmental and non-governmental (including faith-based) organizations and the private sector
Methods: Consultations, people-to-people diplomacy through service, sports, and cultural exchanges

Yerevan, Armenia - The Armenian event of the Global Peace Tour highlighted UPF's South Caucasus Peace Initiative and the philosophy and values of UPF.

Moscow, Russia - A January 23 conference addressed human security issues in the South Caucasus conflict zones and recommended people-to-people diplomacy as a way to resolve long-standing conflicts related to Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Tbilisi, Georgia - The Georgia Peace Festival on December 7 provided opportunities for neighboring peoples in the Caucasus Mountains south of Russian to learn about their diverse people and cultures.

The Eurasian Peace Council of the Universal Peace Federation calls upon the sides of the conflict involving Georgia, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Russia, to comply with the commitments outlined in the “Dmitry Medvedev – Nicolas Sarkozy peace plan” and agreed with the leadership of Georgia.

UPF-Eurasia launched the South Caucasus Peace Initiative in 2008 to promote dialogue and communication, engage in  people-to-people diplomacy, promote interreligious cooperation and provide humanitarian assistance in the South Caucasus and adjacent areas.
